VA Loans in Georgia
Georgia is home to several major military installations, and the state offers meaningful homestead relief to disabled veterans and the families of those who died in service. The federal VA loan benefit is the same in every state: eligible buyers can buy with no down payment and competitive rates.
Georgia benefits for veterans
Property tax relief for veterans
Honorably discharged Georgia veterans may qualify for a homestead exemption from state, county, city and school property taxes if they are rated totally disabled by the VA, are paid at the total disability rate due to unemployability, or receive a VA statutory award for certain losses of limbs or sight.
The exemption amount is tied to an index set by the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, so it can change from year to year.
The exemption continues for an unremarried surviving spouse or minor children for as long as they keep living in the home.
How to apply: Apply with the tax commissioner's office in the county where the home is located.
Other housing-related benefits
- The unremarried surviving spouse of a service member who died in war or armed conflict may qualify for a separate homestead exemption from county, city and school property taxes.
