Maine offers a veterans' property tax exemption to many who served, with larger amounts for those with service-connected disabilities. The federal VA loan benefit is the same in every state: eligible buyers can buy with no down payment and competitive rates.

Maine's veterans' exemption reduces the taxable value of a veteran's homestead. Veterans who served in a combat zone, and veterans with a service-connected disability, may qualify for larger exemptions, with the biggest going to those with the highest disability ratings.
A surviving unremarried spouse, minor child or parent receiving a pension based on a deceased veteran's service can qualify for the same exemption the veteran would have received.
How to apply: Apply with the assessor in the town or city where the home is located.
