VA Loans in North Carolina
North Carolina is one of the most military-connected states in the country, and it offers a dedicated homestead exclusion for disabled veterans and their surviving spouses. The federal VA loan benefit is the same in every state: eligible buyers can buy with no down payment and competitive rates.
North Carolina benefits for veterans
Property tax relief for veterans
The Disabled Veteran Homestead Exclusion removes a portion of a home's appraised value from property taxes for honorably discharged veterans who have a service-connected permanent and total disability, or who have received the VA's specially adapted housing benefit.
A surviving spouse who has not remarried may qualify, including when the veteran's death was certified as service-connected.
There is no age or income requirement. A homeowner who receives this exclusion can't combine it with other property tax relief programs.
How to apply: File with the tax assessor in the county where the home is located.
Other housing-related benefits
- The application must be certified by a North Carolina Veterans Service Officer before it's filed with the county, so a local veterans service office is a good first stop.
